Are you a “Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving” or a “Christmas decorations after Thanksgiving” kind of person? Regardless of which side of this great debate you’re on, a little prep before the decorations go up can go a long way. Before the lights, inflatables, and yard décor come out, give your lawn and landscape a quick reset so everything sits on a clean, safe, good-looking backdrop instead of a messy one.

Walk through any retail center or office park in Central Alabama right now and you’ll notice the changing of the season. Color softens, leaves gather in corners, and evenings arrive earlier. It’s the ideal moment for a fall refresh that makes your property look organized and welcoming before holiday traffic ramps up. Why now What

In Central Alabama, the first cool snap means leaves are about to pick up. A little preparation now keeps your lawn, beds, and gutters clean, and makes the peak drop easier to handle. Here’s a simple, homeowner-friendly plan: what to do, where the leaves should go, and how to get on Steven’s Wack-n-Sack’s schedule so you don’t have to manage it all season.

Getting your lawn ready for fall in Central Alabama is mostly about small, smart adjustments. If you handle your own mowing, use this simple plan to dial in height, timing, blades, and leaves so the yard looks clean now and rides into winter without issues. If you’d rather skip the trial-and-error, Steven’s Wack-n-Sack is always here to take care of it for you.

If you want an evergreen that earns its keep in Alabama, put Oakleaf holly (Ilex × ‘Conaf’) on the list. It handles our heat and humidity, gives consistent cover along property lines, and brings red berries into the cooler months. It’s a practical pick for fall projects when you want the yard looking sharp before the holidays.

If your lawn feels hard underfoot, puddles after a rain, or looks thin in traffic lanes, you’re likely dealing with soil compaction which is a common problem in Alabama’s clay soils. Steven’s Wack-n-Sack uses SoilTech Aeration to open up the soil so air, water, and nutrients can reach the roots again. Do it now, before winter, and you set up stronger spring growth for Bermuda, Zoysia, and Fescue lawns.

Not every thin lawn needs seed. In Central Alabama, where Bermuda and Zoysia are common, the right move depends on sun, timing, and why the turf thinned. Here’s a clear guide from Steven’s Wack-n-Sack to decide when to overseed and when to rehab without seed. The quick decision Why we rarely overseed warm-season lawns in fall Bermuda and Zoysia spread by stolons and rhizomes.

If you want privacy without a wall of fence boards, a living screen is hard to beat. In Central Alabama, evergreen screens soften property lines, muffle street noise, and stay beautiful all year. Done right, they also handle our heat, humidity, and heavy clay soils better than most fast fixes.

Camellias are the workhorse flowering shrubs of Central Alabama. With glossy evergreen leaves and a bloom season that stretches from fall into spring, they deliver reliable color when most plants are quiet. If you live in Alabaster, Trussville, Hoover, Vestavia, or nearby communities, camellias are a smart, low-maintenance way to add structure and long-lasting flowers to beds, entries, and privacy screens.

If you’re not already on a recurring treatment plan, early September is the time to get on the calendar for fall pre-emergent. In Central Alabama, the most effective application window runs from late September into early October. Booking now helps ensure your lawn is treated during that window, before winter weeds like Poa annua, chickweed, and henbit try to take hold.
