Getting your lawn ready for fall in Central Alabama is mostly about small, smart adjustments. If you handle your own mowing, use this simple plan to dial in height, timing, blades, and leaves so the yard looks clean now and rides into winter without issues. If you’d rather skip the trial-and-error, Steven’s Wack-n-Sack is always here to take care of it for you.
Set the right mowing height (don’t scalp before winter)
- Bermuda: 1-1.5″. Hold steady, or raise ¼″ from summer to protect crowns.
- Zoysia: 1.5-2.0″ (varies by cultivar). Aim toward the higher end by late October.
- Tall Fescue (shade pockets): about 2.5-3.5″ for deeper roots and fewer weeds.
Tip: Never remove more than ⅓ of the blade at once. Behind on mowing? Take it down over two cuts, not one.
Match your mowing frequency to the weather
Grass growth slows as soil temps drop. Shift from every 5–7 days to about 7–10 days by late October. If a warm spell or rain spikes growth, add a quick pass to keep the height consistent.
Sharpen blades for cleaner cuts
Frayed, tan tips a day after mowing mean the blade is dull. Sharp blades make a real difference with cleaner cut, better color, and less disease. Fall is a great time to sharpen or swap blades.
Handle leaves the easy way (mulch, don’t bag—most of the time)
Chop light to moderate leaf fall right into the lawn. Raise the deck one notch and mow a little slower so leaves shred into confetti. Bag or blow only when the layer is too heavy to mulch cleanly. Keep leaves out of beds, drains, and curb inlets.
Quick edging and cleanup = instant curb appeal
A simple edge along walks, the driveway, and bed lines makes the whole yard look finished. Trim fence lines and around trees so you don’t leave long, damp strips where disease can start.
Watering tweaks to reduce disease
- Water in the morning so turf dries by midday.
- Water deeper, less often. Short, frequent waterin cycles keep the blades wet and roots shallow.
- Watch for large patch (expanding tan rings) in Bermuda/Zoysia as nights cool; switch to morning irrigation and avoid heavy fall nitrogen if you see it.
A straightforward fall plan you can follow
- Set heights: Bermuda 1–1.5″, Zoysia 1.5–2″, Fescue 2.5–3.5″.
- Sharpen blades (or replace) in October.
- Mow weekly, easing to every 7–10 days as growth slows.
- Mulch-mow leaves each cut so they don’t pile up.
- Edge and trim every cut to ensure clean lines.
- Final pre-dormancy mow: keep the same height—don’t scalp warm-season grass before winter.
