If your Zoysia lawn is still looking a little sleepy this spring, you’re not alone—and you’re not doing anything wrong. In fact, many homeowners across the south are seeing the same thing with Emerald and Z-52 Zoysia varieties this year.
At Steven’s Wack-n-Sack, we manage hundreds of Zoysia lawns—and we’ve noticed the slow start, too. The good news? It’s completely normal, and we’re already on top of it.
Why Is Zoysia Slow to Green Up This Year?
1. Cool Soil Temperatures
Zoysia grass doesn’t take cues from the calendar—it listens to the soil. Until the soil hits 65°F consistently, Zoysia stays dormant. Even if the air feels warm by mid-afternoon, chilly mornings and cold snaps in early spring slow the process way down.
2. Wet Weather and Overcast Days
This spring has been wetter and cloudier than usual. When the ground stays saturated and shaded, it takes longer to warm up. That means slower root activity and slower top growth, especially in shaded areas of your yard.
3. Emerald and Z-52 Are Just… Zoysia Being Zoysia
These are high-quality, fine-bladed grasses—and they’re slow by nature. They’re not broken. They’re just not in a rush. That density you love in July comes with a laid-back attitude in April.
What You Can Do While You Wait
Relax. This Is Normal.
There’s nothing wrong with your grass. Zoysia simply marches to the beat of its own soil thermometer. It will green up, but may take some time this year.
Don’t Overwater or Overthink It
Zoysia only needs about 1 inch of water per week, and that includes rainfall. Overwatering during dormancy can encourage disease or weak growth. Keep a check on the rainfall and water appropriately.
Let Us Know If You See Bare Spots
Brown doesn’t mean dead—but if you’re seeing bare patches, weeds popping through, or drainage issues, give us a call and we can check it out.
Zoysia’s Just Warming Up—And So Are We
We get it—brown grass in May doesn’t feel great. But if you’re seeing a slow start this year, just know that it’s part of Zoysia’s process. Once temperatures stabilize, you’ll see that lush green carpet come in thick, full, and vibrant. And because Steven’s Wack-n-Sack is already watching your lawn like a hawk, you won’t miss a beat.
